WEEK 10 16/04/18 - Lecture: we had lectures on "Sustainability & Business in the 21st Century. It was delivered by a guest lecturer James Whittingham of LSBU. James talked about the key system that sustaining the Earth. This key system are air water and food. There all interconnected one way or the other to sustain life on Earth. We learnt that sustainability is the most amazing thing, in that, it is through it we human beings can do our bit to help in saving and preserving the Planet for ourselves and for future generations. He said that at present we are sustaining the unsustainable, in that, so much damage has been done to the atmosphere, the ocean and the land. He cited plastics pollution in the ocean, electronic waste on landfill sites, marine mammals, birds, animals, plants and the ecosystem dying and facing total extinction. WEEK 9 06/04/18 Easter Holidays - for this break, there were no lectures nor seminars. However, we the Edge Consultancy group met together on the day of vacation and had briefing on the state of progress thus far. We decided on individual tasks to find solutions to the problem we have already identified in our chosen organisation (G Baldwin & Co). Due to Easter Holidays, we agreed to exchange finished tasks on WhatsApp platform for reviewing. Everyone did the tasks and posted on medium of communication. We individually scrutinised each other's work to choose the appropriate ones for the courasework. On Tuesday 03/04/18, we exchanged views and agreed to meet up in Kingsley house in the following week (Monday 09/04/18) to put the slides together for the presentation. It was a good break to rest and focus on completing the group work. It was fun! PS: I had done this blogging on 06/04/18 but it appeared on another student's blogger account. WEEK 8 - 19/03/18 - 23/03/18 LECTURE - A video on five trends shaping the future of the Information System was shown. We learnt about business processes and routines on the collection and use of both organisational and personal data, operating procedures, precise rules on data storage, distribution and use so that there is no misuse of such data by any employee. We learnt that Information Technology and organisation influence each other in the areas of Technical - being social structure that processes resource from the environment to produce outputs Behavioural - like rights,privileges, obligations and responsibilities balanced over a period of time through conflicts and its management.and solution. WEEK 7 LECTURES / 12/03/18 - 16/03/18 LECTURE - We watched a video on how to use Prezi tool for coursework presentation. We also looked at the outline of good presentation, such as Agenda, Structure (opening), Structure (body), Structure (summary), good slides, bad slides, animations, fonts, colour and background. Furthermore, we learnt planning such as purpose (why, what?), audience (who, where?), know your subject well, develop a scheme, a story, focus on the main point and concepts, and how to use template to present to do good presentation. We learnt how to always end the presentation with asking the audience if there are any questions they would like to ask. We should remember to engage the audience through eye contact, change of voice tone to emphasize an important point, and to thank each questioner and the audience in general. WEEK 6 - 05/03/18 - 09/03/18 LECTURE - TOPIC: CLOUD COMPUTING & RELATIONAL DATABASES - We reviewed week five lectures and then moved on to week 6 lecture by discussing utility computing. We learnt subscription-based renting services. Organisations rent resources such processing, data, storage networking from external provider on as-needed bases for weekly or monthly payment. We also looked at Scalability benefits, which is thew ability to adapts to demands Rent time/place on physical resources No initial cost - there is no prior charge for subscribing. Organisations only pay per use. The moment one presses the user button, charge starts till the stop/finish button is pressed to end the activity. WEEK 5 LECTURE - The lectures started with ArGIS videos, which is about using information systems to gather and map information geographically. Like Google Map, ArGIS information map can be accessed and used by organisations and institutions, such as the emergency services. The lectures also focused on the crimes and threats facing the information system and the security controls that can be used to prevent or curtail these cyber crimes and threats that are associated to information systems. To prevent information systems crimes from happening, employees are made to sign private and confidentiality agreements. No one is allowed to extract any sensitive organisational data from the company databases for personal use. Unauthorised people are not allowed to access the company information systems whatsoever.
